Manuscript Catalogues
These catalogues are temporary lists which help staff
in the Manuscript Section, National Library of Australia, organise
the archival material and then compile the Library's
finding aid to the Records collected by the Polish Historical
Institute in Australia, based on these catalogues. This is necessary
because the majority of the archival records are in the Polish
language. Each consignment of material is accompanied by a numbered
catalogue indicating the number of consignments already deposited
at the Library.
Prior to deposit, the Institute applies a set of selection guidelines
to the material to see whether it is eligible for the National
Library. These guidelines have been approved by the Library and
are included in the Institute's agreement with them. Once passed
a catalogue is written of the overall contents of the consignment.
The National Library's finding
aid to the Institute's collection, known as the Records collected
by the Polish Historical Institute in Australia and identified
by the location number MS 9562, should be regarded
as the official list for the public to use and
reflects how the collection is organised by the Library. In effect
the finding aid combines the catalogues to form one list which
guides the user to the collection's contents.
The manuscript catalogues listed on this website are only an
unofficial guide to what has been deposited and
may not accurately reflect which records the public has access
to at the Library, as quite a lot of organising is required to
prepare them for public use. Any disparities between the catalogues
listed here and the Library's finding aid is dependent on the
Library's resources and questions regarding this should be addressed
to the Manuscript
Reading Room.
The Polish Historical Institute in Australia contacted various
Polish organisations and individuals in Australia asking for records
held by them which would fall into the following appraisal categories:
- administrative records of the creators
- records of legal value
- records of financial accountability
- records of historical interest for public relations and general
interest purposes
These categories are taken from current archival practise.
Records of historical interest for public relations and general
interest purposes provide the social, political, economic, educational,
recreational context in which the records can be understood.
Arrangement of the Catalogues is alphabetical by provenance,
in English with parallel Polish. This is followed by a description
and its archival category, date range, quantity and a finding
aid, if any, in English only.
