| This exhibition looks at the history of Polish settlement in the Canberra
region from their arrival in 1948 to the present. It examines the Poles'
transformation from refugees, émigrés and migrants to
Canberra citizens through their cultural objects, artefacts, photographs
and documents. It is a joint venture between the Polish Historical Institute
in Australia and the Canberra Museum and Gallery.
Stories of deportation and survival during World War II; imprisonment and torture in Communist Poland; family reunions in Canberra; building a Polish community; the soup-kitchen lady; Australian aircrew over Warsaw; cults to Our Lady - Black Madonna & Ostrabramska; the lajkonik legend and pisanki Easter eggs; Pope John Paul II in Canberra; amber jewellery; Australian naturalisation certificates; national costumes; home remedies. Told through displays, panels and catalogue featuring eagles, uniforms, books, medals, standards, banners, maps, rosary beads, identification papers, trophies, mincer, hammer, statue and crosses. The Schools Program uses the exhibition to explore the Poles, their identity, culture and settlement. The two sets of questionnaires and activity sheets give teachers a resource and students plenty of activities. The program covers primary schools from years 4 through to 6 and secondary schools from years 7 to 12. Teachers may download the Schools Program as permission to reproduce is given provided it is done so in its entirety. Schools should contact Enquiries to book a visit to the exhibition. The exhibition is closed every Monday. In conjunction with the exhibition are a number of community programs such as children's films, decorating eggs, making Polish dumplings, a Chopin recital featuring his letters, interview with a Polish veteran, Polish afternoon tea.
