He also had a private meeting with the Polish community
of Australia on the 28th November at the Melbourne Cricket Ground
attended between 25,000 and 40,000 people commencing at 8.15 pm.
It included a Mass spoken in Polish and concelebrated by 48 Polish
chaplains serving in all parts of Australia.
This event was organised by the Victorian Organizing Committee
Meeting with Pope John Paul II and the Organizing Committee of the
Polish-Australian Community Meeting with Pope John Paul II together
with assistance from the many Polish Australian umbrella, state
and local organisations (Source: Jan Pawel II w Australii : spotkanie
z polakami, Melbourne, M.C.G., 28 Listopada 1986)
The programme for this meeting included a concert, official greetings
(by Bishop S. Wesoly, Father Wrona, Mr. K. Lancucki), a Mass, an
hour with the Pope and the Rosary.
The stadium was filled with white and red banners, the national
colours of Poland. Some welcomed the Pope, others had names of Australian
cities and town, others represented various Polish groups and organisations
- Polish ethnic schools, youth groups, veterans. A huge Solidarity
banner was draped over the whole upper deck of the Western stand.
Many wore their regional costumes.
With the arrival of the Popemobile, the crowd sang "Sto lat"
- meaning " Live 100 years". Members of various dance
groups performed.
The Pope spoke in Polish to his compatriots referring to the many
Polish and Australian links, his first visit in 1973, the difficulties
of emigration, the Polish church in Australia, the importance of
family.
He was presented with flowers by three Polish Australian children.
This was followed by the Liturgy of the Word, a multi-lingual greeting
to other national groups, a meeting and blessing of the sick and
disabled. His departure was to the hymn "Boze cos Polske"
- Protect Poland, O God.
A copy of the Pope's speech given to the Poles is available on
the Vatican website but only in Polish http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/speeches/1986/november/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_19861128_com-polacca-melbourne-australia_pl.html
The Victorian Polish Organising Committee also organized a concert
in the Dallas Brooks Hall at 5.00 pm on the 28th Nov. which included
guests of the Catholic Church, Australian and state government officials.
The concert titled Letter to the Pope attracted a full house of
approx. 2,000 people and was regarded by the Polish Australian community
as one of the most important and significant artistic concerts organized.
The cost to the Polish Australian community for the Pope's visit
amongst them was $115,647.31. The Victorian Polish Organising Committee,
which carried out the details of this meeting published this figure
in The advocate, 7 May 1987. A letter from Chris Hurford, the Minister
assisting the Prime Minister for the Papal Visit acknowledged the
financial contribution of the Polish Australian community toward
this visit.
Special issue of Tygodnik Polski
A special issue of the Polish Australian Catholic newspaper Tygodnik
Polski, no. 48, 6 December 1986 was published on the occasion of
